116 items of graphic design and much of the professional archive of Juan Carlos Pérez Sánchez, known professionally as America Sanchez, now form part of the graphic design collection of the Museum and the Documentation Centre archive. The designer, awarded six times with the ADG/FAD Laus Award and a National Design Award, made the donation of items this week.
Born in Buenos Aires in 1939 and self-taught, he specialised in the design of corporate identity and the creation of icons, working with posters, typography, drawing, photography and advertising. Many of these projects have become part of the Documentation Centre and will be able to be viewed shortly. In addition, a selection of the hundred design pieces will become stars of the permanent exhibition that is being prepared for 2018.
What are some of the best known projects? The corporate image of the Picasso Museum in Barcelona, the graphics for Torraspapel, the panoramic mural for the Forum of Cultures, posters for the 2005 La Mercè Festival and the creation of the logo for the Barcelona ‘92 bid that this year celebrates its 25th anniversary.
America Sanchez is a great experimenter and discoverer of a diversity of languages, techniques and graphic resources, which have earned him several awards and the inclusion of one of his creations (the Niños series) in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Soon, you’ll be able to discover the legacy of the designer in the exhibition rooms of the museum!
