Sorolla and fashion, at the Thyssen-Bornemisza
This February, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum will open a very special exhibition, «Sorolla y la Moda» (Sorolla and Fashion). We at Museu del Disseny will be taking part with the loan of four pieces from the fashion collection which will help explain the link between the Valencian artist and fashion.
The pieces from the fashion collection provided for the occasion are a sports jacket and trouser set from the 1920s, a straw boater, a 1914 wedding dress and a tulle dress embroidered with sequins. These fashionable examples from the first quarter of the twentieth century will help to demonstrate the influence that fashion has had on the work of Joaquín Sorolla, especially in the female portraits that he made between 1890 and 1920.
The exhibition, in a collaboration between the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and the Sorolla Museum and curated by Eloy Martínez de La Pera, can be see from 13th February to 27th May, 2018 at the Madrid museum.
Other national and international institutions have also collaborated with their fashion collections. This is the case of the Terrassa Textile Museum and Documentation Centre, the Costume Museum of Madrid, the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
