Who is Enric Satué?
If a work can bring us closer to a figure like Enric Satué, we only need to mention some of his best-known creations to clearly see the impression he has made on the world of graphic design. He is the designer, for example, of the masthead for the newspaper El Periódico, the cover designs of the Editorial Alfaguara, the design of the CAU magazine (from the Barcelona Architects Association), the official poster for the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games or the logos of the Cervantes Institute, the MNAC or the Up&Down discotheque.
Winner of the National Design Award in 1988, Enric Satué (Barcelona, 1938) is one of the landmark figures in graphic design in our country, especially in the field of magazines, newspapers and books. Throughout his career he has also been one of the most outstanding theorists of the history and praxis of graphic design, with books such as El diseño gráfico: desde los origenes hasta nuestros dias (Graphic Design: from the origins to the present), El diseño gráfico en España: Historia de una forma comunicativa nueva, (Graphic design in Spain: History of a new communicative form), Los años del diseño: La década republicana 1931-1939 (The years of design: The Republican decade 1931-1939) and El diseño de libros del pasado, del presente y tal vez del futuro (The design of books from the past, from the present and possibly the future). He is also currently an associate professor at Universitat Pompeu Fabra and at the Barcelona School of Architecture.
Currently, some of his most iconic pieces form part of the new permanent exhibition of the Museu del Disseny “Design or work? the new visual communication. 1980-2003”. And this is why he was invited to take part in the series of lectures, which began on 10th October with the curator of the exhibition, Raquel Pelta.
Under the title “Graphic design, between good taste and bad taste”, Satué will re-examine his vision of the discipline on Wednesday, 17th October at 7pm at the Museu del Disseny in Barcelona.
