BARCELONA DESIGN MUSEUM 2017 EXHIBITION PROGRAMME

Brick by Brick. Ceramics Applied to Architecture

Last chance to visit Brick by Brick. Ceramics Applied to Architecture, an exhibition curated by Pedro Azara.

The show spans more than twelve thousand years of history, featuring a selection of three hundred works that illustrate the application of ceramics in architecture, on loan from more than sixty national and European collections.

Brick by Brick. Ceramics Applied to Architecture is the first major exhibition to be devoted to the uses, functions, symbolism and aesthetics of this type of ceramic. The show is organised around four themes, The Projected Home, The Constructed Home, The Protected House and The Lived House, and its discourse enables the visitor to discover the many advances, inventions and innovations that ceramic, applied to architecture, has generated over the centuries and across a broad geographic area. The exhibits include characteristic examples from outstanding cultures and key historic periods, as well as works by such renowned artists as Picasso, Miró, Dalí, Chillida, Vilató, Barceló and Miquel Navarro, among others.

Tapas. Spanish Design for Food
8 March 2017 to 21 May 2017

The exhibition Tapas. Spanish Design for Food, organised by Acción Cultural Española - ACE (Spanish Cultural Action) and the Museu del Disseny de Barcelona/Barcelona Design Museum will open at the museum on 8 March 2017, marking the end of a three-year journey in which the travelling show was presented at such cities as Tokyo, Miami, Washington, Seoul, Toronto and Madrid, among others.
Tapas. Spanish Design for Food explores the interaction between design and food and drink. While not neglecting important popular traditions in Catalan and Spanish design, the show focuses, in the main, on creations from the last 25 years. From the creative collaboration between Ferran Adrià and the industrial designer Luki Huber to classics like Rafael Marquina’s non-drip oil and vinegar bottles, not forgetting such everyday design objects as the porrón wine glass and the paella cooking pan. In Tapas, more than 250 pieces – utensils, gadget, containers, furniture – videos and photographs link the world of material culture to food and drink, history, architecture, and interior, industrial and graphic design.
Curated by the designer and architect Juli Capella, Tapas gives visitors a taste of the contribution made by design to food and drink in three themed sections: The Kitchen; The Table; and Food.
The exhibition will also be accompanied by a full programme of workshops, lectures and parallel activities.

David Bowie Is
From 25 May 2017

David Bowie Is will open on 25 May 2017. The Museu del Disseny de Barcelona/Barcelona Design Museum is the only centre in Spain that will exclusively host David Bowie Is, the successful, innovative retrospective curated by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, which has just reached the landmark figure of one-and-a-half million visitors on its world tour.

David Bowie Is explores the creative processes of David Bowie as a musical innovator and cultural icon, tracing his shifting style and sustained reinvention across five decades. The exhibition also focuses on the broad range of Bowie’s collaborations with artists and designers, illustrating how his work influenced and was influenced by countless movements in the fields of art, design, music and the theatre.
The Victoria and Albert Museum in London was given unprecedented access to the David Bowie Archive to curate the first international retrospective of the extraordinary career of David Bowie - one of the most pioneering and influential performers of modern times.
The exhibition features more than 300 objects, including photographs, record covers, handwritten lyrics, original costumes, set designs and previously-unseen material from concerts over the last five decades, all on loan from the David Bowie Archive.
Moreover, the retrospective on David Bowie is a complete audiovisual experience thanks to the use of the latest multimedia technology.

Tickets on sale at www.davidbowieis.es and www.ticketea.es. Admission prices to this exhibition have been reduced thanks to an agreement between Barcelona City Council and the organisers of David Bowie Is in Barcelona. As a result, the price of general admission to the show is lower than the average at the nine museums where it was presented previously. There is also a discount for Gaudir Més users.

Adolf Loos – Private Spaces
From 14 December 2017 to 25 February 2018

The exhibition Adolf Loos. Private Spaces presents, for the first time in Spain, a vast display of the work of this outstanding figure in Viennese architecture, a pioneer in the debate between spaces in public and private life. The show highlights the aesthetic revolution led by Loos (1870-1933) when, in the Austrian capital at the turn of the twentieth century, he rebelled against the Viennese Secession, proposing economy in architectural construction and design, reviving the classical column and facing and the traditional values of the classical style.
Adolf Loos will explore the literary, architectural and philosophical context of early-twentieth-century Vienna and will feature projects and around one hundred objects from among the furniture used in houses and apartments designed by Loos. It is in these interior spaces in which we find Adolf Loos at his most revolutionary. The apartment is the intimate sphere, the individual’s refuge from social life. Loos’ design of private spaces and his use of domestic furniture richly illustrate the new forms that lifestyle culture was beginning to adopt.
The exhibition is a coproduction by Museu del Disseny de Barcelona/Barcelona Design Museum and “la Caixa” Foundation. The works are from the Hummel Collection, Vienna, the Albertina Museum of Vienna, the Architekturemuseum.Technische niversität, Munich, the Historisches Museum der Stadt of Vienna and a private collection in the United Kingdom.
