An app to facilitate the classification of ceramics

The worries of archaeologists and scholars of ceramic design are over: the Museu del Disseny has collaborated with the European project ArchAIDE to create an app for mobile devices that classifies ceramic pieces using a simple photograph.

This initiative, in which universities around the world such as Pisa, Barcelona, ​​Cologne, York or Tel Aviv have taken part, aims to facilitate the classification of ceramics from different periods and cultures through shape, colour and decoration using an image of the object itself. The ARQUB research team from the archaeometric studies department at the University of Barcelona has been working for a while on the ceramics collection of the Museu del Disseny studying, photographing and drawing a selection of almost 200 ceramic pieces that will form part of the mobile application. One of the most studied typologies in the collection is the majolica ceramics from the thirteenth to the eighteenth centuries, consisting of bowls, plates, serving dishes and pharmacy jars.
